“My tree is in the small cemetery at the back of a church in Merton. I often walk through it on my way to work. It's very peaceful and quiet. The tree branches looming over the graves like the roof of a house. Protective and accommodating. It makes me think about the housing situation in London. Makes me think about how ridiculous is the dream of buying a property here. It makes me think about how we adjust our dreams of owning a home. All the precarious ways people find to accommodate this dream.

Deborah Levy in ‘Real Estate’ writes about this dream. The idea of her perfect home is constantly evolving. The fact that it is only imagined allows her to dream big and to be unreasonable. How much space do we need? Is the garden big enough to fit a studio?

This beech tree houses hundreds of creatures and it's almost big enough to house a person. It could be a dream home... A Home of One's Own.”
