Yaning Wu
Making light

This short poem is a reflection on a spontaneous trip to Great Shelford, when I walked around the quiet town, wandered into a charity shop to escape the heat, and sat for a long while on a public bench watching young people frolick around a skate park and “inclusive playspace”.

I’d always felt wary of entering children’s spaces, even though they often looked fun, but this one was meant to be “inclusive”, so I ventured in. I felt freed by not only the slightly dizzying sensation of swinging this swing, but also of the long-awaited joy of gingerly traversing a ground-level trampoline and of standing on one of those purposefully wobbly pieces of equipment. The sun flitted back and forth and I got a true sense of the season.

Daniel H Bell, Self-Portrait with Diaphonized Monkey, 2023, Acrylic, wood stain and gel on balsa wood, 7x10 cm) 9x12 cm framed
.

Awarded the Contemporary British Painting Prize in 2024, Bell’s ambiguous-looking paintings display an ever-changing cast of peculiar creatures, rotting surfaces and miscellaneous body parts. Working intuitively and embracing accidents, his pieces are a chaotic mixture of realism, caricature and abstraction. The imagery that he creates usually veers toward the recognisable forms of human faces, native wildlife and anything that his subconscious drags up in between. Cartoon-like imagery often collapses into something more obscure, shifting from the humorous to the sinister and horrific.

Daniel H Bell (b.1980) lives and works in the UK, with a practice that revolves around painting and filmmaking. His work explores the fragile relationship between humans and their natural environment, with enigmatic set pieces involving various animal and hybrid characters.

Sophie Whitehead
After A Darkening Time, I See

This poem sprang up and grew out of a long weekend at the end of winter; the first hot sun hours had appeared at the end of March. Days of family in the garden opened the doorway to spring promise. I watched the twilight fade to darkness as I always love to do, and observed the nature and sky around me in it’s own soft sounds and silence. The words appeared and trailed on to my page in metaphors and anticipated magic of seasons and moments to come.

Martin Clarkson is a British artist living and working in Nottinghamshire. He graduated from Loughborough School of Art and Design in 2012 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. Since then, he has worked on numerous exhibition projects, artist in residence opportunities, commissions and educational workshops across the UK and beyond. These include the ‘Made in England’ group exhibition at Suzhou Jinji Lake Art Museum in China, ‘Santa Catalina Art School’ in South Spain, guest international artist at Prague Art Fair and recently a longlisted artist for Jackson’s Art Prize. His work is in private collections across the UK, Europe, China and Australia.

“When in the forest, I often begin with a scouting mission. Foraging for ideas, I take note of the tree’s architecture; how its weight sits, where its form flows and jilts in direction, its textures of bark, from smooth, silver growth to broken shards splitting and crumpling like strata. I look for burrs, epicormic shoots, brown rot, corpse-like coatings of lichens, moist mosses and fruiting fungi. On location I use paint in a sculptural and immediate way, responding to the moment and trying to capture an essence of the experience.” - Martin Clarkson

Hannah Rollings,
Pink Mountain,
oil and acrylic on handmade paper,
22x 31cm
In 2014, Hannah embarked on a practice-led AHRC-funded PhD through Kingston University and the London Doctoral Design Centre, looking at picturing trees where her love of nature and the pull of the outdoors gained further importance in her practice—working collaboratively with the Forestry Commission and school children developing site-specific interactive work that sought to encourage a reconnection with nature. Shaping and developing an expanded artistic practice previously fractured and stifled by publishing and commercial avenues into an immersive on-site practice.
Encompassing both studio and plein-air painting, Hannah seeks to connect with her surroundings through an immersive painting experience, exploring an emotive response to colour and mark-making, most recently as an artist-in-residence with SeeFood Room Gallery in Hong Kong with a resulting solo show in 2024 and culminating in a practice that sits somewhere between abstraction and representation.

“My practice focuses on picturing landscapes to imbue and reconsider our connection with nature. Reflecting and considering where I, as an artist, position myself and further notions of the figure in the landscape to address and reconsider broader issues within a changing world that would benefit from a rewilding to reverse some negative impacts.”
