“I often spend time looking at what may be overlooked; in this case I was interested in the root structure of these trees and how they looked like tentacles searching for purchase in the ground. I’ve been reading about how trees are connected to each other underground via Mycelium which create a network for trees to communicate. The idea of a community under our feet is something I find comforting as I reflect on the future of the environment, and I also find the longevity of trees fascinating. I imagine all the people who have come and gone and, through it all, the forest has endured.”

Rebecca Byrne is an American artist with a practice based in drawing and painting living and working in London; she works on canvas and aluminum, as well as 9m long paper which she uses to create immersive site-responsive installations that can be rolled up and reinterpreted in another location.
Byrne’s uncanny and fantastical landscapes reflect how she mediates the world. Rooted in fragments of memory, reality and fantasy, she explores our relationship to the environment by referencing images of extinct and existing plant life that never actually co-existed, creating pictures of nature in flux with searing colour. Throughout her practice there is an obscured personal narrative; Byrne’s recent work draws from her background growing up in urban Chicago and spending weekends with her parents as they attempted to establish a small organic farm well before most people were considering our relationship to the land. Researching the systems and structures of plants, she uses real and imagined subject matter to propose an alternate natural world.

This painting was a part of the England is a Forest exhibition at Sluice [Vernacular] Colchester 2024 and is available for purchase in our online shop.

About the work, Johnson writes:

“Since my father’s dementia diagnosis, I have been caring for him in Suffolk, taking long walks in ‘Constable Country’ (as Constable said: “all those things that lie on the banks of the Stour, they made me a painter”) to take a break from the pain of situation.

Discovering Willy Lott’s gravestone in St Mary’s Church, East Bergholt, a few hundred yards from where John Constable grew up (and a further few hundred yards from where my nieces go to school) was a revelation. Willy Lott was a local farmer who rented a cottage from Constable’s father, which still stands today, and can be seen stage-left in ‘The Hay Wain’.

While Willy’s gravestone is unremarkable, a nearby yew tree grows over - and seemingly out of - a now unreadable stone. Yew trees are very common in English graveyards, often planted above graves to provide protection in the afterlife. And this particular yew had a shape not unlike my dad’s brain scan, the near-black yew looking like the end-game of dad’s dementia. For me, this is a perfect subject for a painting...”

Johnson is a prolific artist, having recently curated the exhibitions: ‘Dancing About Architecture’ at @hyphastudios and ‘Touch-Paper’ at @terrace_gallery .

He has an upcoming exhibition with artist Sukey Sleeper at @twoplustwo202 5 Sept-13 Oct (PV 4 Sept 6-8 pm) & is curating the exhibition ‘At Home With the Copelands’ as part of the @blinkandyoullmissitart takeover at Safehouse1 14-15 Sept (PV 13 Sept 6-9pm).

Johnson was selected for the prestigious John Moores Painting Prize at Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool in 2010 and the Contemporary British Painting Prize in 2023, and was the winner of the inaugural Lido Stores Open, Margate in 2021.

Crimson works directly in paint, without preliminary sketches, a reciprocal process between artist and painting. Call and response. She allows the paint to ask questions of herself and her place in the world. Pushing fluid colour; imagery emerges. She is curious about a self, revealed through this reflective experience, which may offer up some purpose, or a reason to carry on.
Time to drift and reflect are crucial. The clock stops. It’s beautiful to take time, to float. The thought experience is engulfing, diffuse and beautifully elusive. It contrasts to work, work, work. She’s worked since she was 13. Cleaning, nursing, caring, cooking, admin, childcare,typing, tidying, serving, listening, caring, mediating, enabling, helping; work many women her age may have done for a wage that never seems to increase, a constant side stepping motion. Rubbing her out. Wearing at her. Making her fade.
Brush strokes and colours trigger imagery. Thought materialises and evaporates. The orderly mind grasps but imagery slips in and out of focus. Mixed emotions and memories emerge; absurd, tender, personal. Themes become apparent; revealing Crimson’s experience of the world.
She is curious about the quality of thought accessed whilst painting.

Renata’s work delves into profound and timely themes that revolve around immigration, notions of territory, identity, and displacement. These societal issues serve as a potent source of inspiration and contemplation for her, as she strives to bring attention to the sociopolitical aspects inherent in the found imagery she incorporates into her work.

This ongoing series of Fast & Furious oil pastel drawings on paper delves into urban trees casting their shadows over domestic architecture. Not much thought or planning is allowed with these works. They are inspired or based on found images from Fernandez’ social media.

“My tree is in the small cemetery at the back of a church in Merton. I often walk through it on my way to work. It’s very peaceful and quiet. The tree branches looming over the graves like the roof of a house. Protective and accommodating. It makes me think about the housing situation in London. Makes me think about how ridiculous is the dream of buying a property here. It makes me think about how we adjust our dreams of owning a home. All the precarious ways people find to accommodate this dream.

Deborah Levy in ‘Real Estate’ writes about this dream. The idea of her perfect home is constantly evolving. The fact that it is only imagined allows her to dream big and to be unreasonable. How much space do we need? Is the garden big enough to fit a studio?

This beech tree houses hundreds of creatures and it’s almost big enough to house a person. It could be a dream home... A Home of One’s Own.”

“The fig tree grows out of the wall at Castle Park on Bristol’s Floating Harbour, just east of Bristol Bridge. This wall, thirty feet high, was part of the defences of the ancient castle.

There are a number of fig trees in the area; the seeds could have been deposited in bird droppings in a similar fashion to mistletoe? It is thought that warm water from the brewery opposite may have helped it survive severe Winter temperatures. Every so often, it is heavily reduced so that it does not create problems for the river traffic.

Imagine how fascinating it would have been for Bristolians at the time this tree took root over 100 years ago. Such an exotic specimen would usually only be seen by visiting a plant collection at places such as Kew Gardens in London.”

“I developed a close working relationship with this tree whilst studying at Newcastle University. The tree stood just outside the department, and upon investigation, played quite a big part of many peoples lives at university. It is ever present. Seen out of many windows, in the backgrounds of many graduation photos. Its leaf litter made its way inside the art department on the bottoms of peoples shoes, blowing in the wind. Every season it spread new material, deposited itself in all its stages. Bud, twig, branch, leaf. It became my calendar, and I spent my final year working with it directly, trying my best to know and be known by this tree.

This new work is formed with remaining matter from this conversation.

The accumulation of this exploration was a show that detailed this conversation in all its complexities, supported by this written work:

All is made of you.

Of all your bends and snaps and cracks,
Of every blend and scrape and smack.

Paintings of ink from boiled sticks, Mounted in paper from pulsed matter,
All framed in gathered limbs.
Green fingers taped with collected branches.
Drawings wrapped around bark, rolled for response.
Hair painted picture, me as you.

And alongside, devices of our journey detail the route.

This room is filled with conversation.
When does pursuit become invasion?

My love for you is illustrated,
Unpacked unpicked unstitched, refitted.

However hard I tried to make

My arms to branches,

They turned to stakes.

I cannot learn, cannot undress you

And I will not ever impress you.

One thing made true, and clear, and stark
I make the movement; you make the mark.”

“The cherry tree is in a garden oasis, approximately 1300 ft on the side of a mountain in North Wales. All around are grasslands on a steep and rocky slope, and below is a deep glacial valley. Lots of birds use the tree, which grows in the centre of the small garden. Woodpeckers, wrens, robins, willow warblers, tits, nut hatch, chaffinch, blackbirds, crows and pheasants strut around under its branches. It grows at an angle and two trunks grow from its base. Its colourful blossom and lovely shade are a joy in this exposed and windswept place.”

“Whenever I go home to Northamptonshire, I always make time to walk along the Nene River, a place I have been familiar with all my life. It is where I can gather my thoughts and gain some peace and clarity. I love the sense of space and fresh air out in the countryside. I always look to the trees along the river to track the changing seasons and environment.”

“This tree is a short walk away from my house. I am lucky that I live in an area surrounded by lots of trees and lots of choice. I stumbled across this tree whilst painting on location last summer and really enjoyed the view. I have returned to this same location to paint the same tree many times and look forward to getting out this year to paint it again.”

“This is one of a number of hornbeams that were planted in a double row at the edge of a local wood (the wood bears the name of a local estate that was reportedly landscaped by a certain Lancelot “Capability” Brown. I have no idea whether he was responsible for the planting, but it seems plausible).

Not one of those trees points at the sky - somehow the trunks are all tilted and have been growing straight in their various, non-vertical directions for some time. Other types of tree would have righted themselves, but hornbeam is evidently too stubborn to do that.

This group of mature, un-coppiced trees were the first hornbeams that I knowingly encountered. I have since developed a great fondness for the fluted trunks and unassumingly wayward characters of hornbeam, which is close to the edge of its natural range here, in north Hampshire.

I have drawn this tree before, using its crook to frame the view along the line of crazily-angled trees, but this time I drew it for it’s own sake.”

“This tree stands with several others in a line that would once have been a hedge. Over the last two or three years, I have observed it’s decline until last summer when it had just a few clips of leaves. The buds should be swelling now and ready to burst into leaf, but I doubt that will happen this year.”
